MastroTitta the executioner of Rome
This famous executioner of papal Rome clocked up some 516 executions between March 1796 and August 1864. He hanged, quartered, hammered to death and decapitated his victims becoming a legend in certain extraordinary sonnets by Belli. Solitary and somber, he would wander around the 'Borghi' (he lived in fact in Borgo Sant'Angelo) terrifying all those who might recognise him. He was, however, also rather popular inasmuch as the death sentences carried out by order of the papal authorities were always large crowd gatherers. These semi-theatrical events took place on Sant'Angelo Bridge, in Piazza del Popolo or in Via dei Cerchi.
