Meo Patacca is a Roman stock character representing the swaggering courage of certain inhabitants of Trastevere, the most densely populated area of Rome. Witty and insolent, Meo Patacca is the classic Roman bully. Though rather brash, rowdy, and an expert in the use of the slingshot, he is, nevertheless, generous and open. His name derives from the "patacche" or pieces with which Romans would refer to the 5 carlini coins making up a soldier's pay. He likes to show off and speak in a declamatory style in Roman dialect. When necessary he does not turn his back on danger. On the contrary, when there is a fight to be fought, he readily joins the scuffle. He is famous all throughout Trastevere and greater Rome.
