Pasquino is the soul of Rome and most famous 'talking statue' of the capital. He became a characteristic figure of the city between the sixteenth and the nineteenth centuries, but his origin is shrouded in mystery and the legends abound. According to some, Pasquino was supposedly someone from that quarter of Rome, perhaps a barber, a blacksmith, a tailor or a shoemaker, known for his satyrical statements. From the feet, or more often, the neck of the statue, at night people would hang anonymous notes containing poetic satyre directed against important public figures. These constituted the famous "pasquinate", which would threateningly reveal how disgruntled people were concerning the upper echelons of power, not to mention the corruption and arrogance of those occupying them.
