Rugantino is a stock character of Roman theatre. He embodies a typical Roman character - er bullo de Trastevere - (the bully of Trastevere), quick with words and the knife. This youth is intolerably arrogant, yet good at heart and loveable. However, his most salient characteristic does remain his arrogance, which is at the basis of his name - ruganza meaning in Roman dialect 'arrogance'.
